Dabo Swinney rebukes reporter who asked about Clemson's roster construction days after lopsided Week 1 loss to LSU

This summer, Clemson found itself outside the preseason AP Top 25 for the first time since 2011. Even so, the Tigers were just a handful of votes shy of the No. 25 ranking.

Now, three days after its 51-10 defeat to a newly eighth-ranked LSU , Clemson isn't even in the receiving votes section of the AP poll . Embarrassed in the SEC's Death Valley, the Tigers retreated back to their abode, which, at the moment, is hardly the intimidating environment it's been for most of Dabo Swinney's 19-season head-coaching tenure.

Swinney is 7-8 in his last 15 games at the helm, dating back to a first-round College Football Playoff loss to Texas at the end of the 2024 campaign. The shine of his two national titles is growing dim in the NIL and transfer portal era, and his relentless positivity is falling on deaf ears not even two weeks into September.

Swinney is under fire, and his latest news conference tirade is fanning the flames warming his seat.

The State's Chapel Fowler asked Swinney on Tuesday if he regretted anything about his offseason roster construction right now.

Swinney, who began chuckling and sporting a wry smile as the question neared its end, responded: "Chapel, you come with all these questions. I'll tell ya. You're 'the gotcha guy.'"

Swinney continued, turning to the question at hand: "No, I don't. I don't, man. I regret being 0-1 right now. I regret that. But, no, we're uh — can you ask me that at the end of the season? You know? The season ain't over. I mean, we [played] one game. We've got 11 more.

"What if we go 11-1? You promise me you'll ask me that then?"

"OK good," Swinney said. "I'll answer it, alright. But I'm not answering questions like that, Chapel. I know that's your role in this environment to be the guy that wants to create all the controversy and ask the controversial questions. If that's who you are, that's fine. I get it."

Swinney went on: "But I'll answer that at the end of the season — we played one game. One game. Alright?"

Swinney then proceeded to ask Fowler if he played football.

"They give you 12 games," Swinney said. "And at the end of the year, you count 'em up. That's when those type of questions are fair, to me, not after one game, to maybe the best team in the country. … Other people have good teams and coaches and things like that, too. So give them credit."

Swinney, trying to shift the focus to a Week 2 home matchup versus Georgia Southern, concluded: "We've got 11 more games to go battle, and then we'll count 'em up. And then you can ask me whatever question you want."

While Swinney waded deeper into the transfer portal waters than in years past — adding a program-record 13 portal and JUCO players this offseason — he notably didn't bring in a transfer quarterback. Plus, the Tigers didn't reel in a single offensive lineman in the portal despite losing four starters up front from the 2025 squad.

Clemson was outgained 644-145 on Saturday in Baton Rouge. Clemson conceded four sacks, and its two quarterbacks — senior Christopher Vizzina and freshman Tait Reynolds — both struggled, with neither averaging more than 5.2 yards per pass attempt.
