Kentucky Offense Review: Wildcats do it again with walk off win
The Kentucky football offense does it again, with another walk off two-point conversion for the win.
Kentucky football found a way to knock off a top ten LSU team with another walk off two-point conversion. The Wildcats are the first team in FBS history to win consecutive games by one point in overtime. Will Stein is showing the confidence in his football team and his coaching staff as the Wildcats are now sitting at 5-1 and ranked 15th in the country . Kentucky has been resilient all season long, and we will start by reviewing the offensive side of the football that is getting better every single week.
Coming into this game, Blake Baker's defense led the SEC in EPA per play and EPA per dropback allowed. The Tigers also ranked 3rd in the conference in EPA per rush attempt. This LSU defense is an elite group with playmakers at every level, but they could not figure out Kentucky's offense on Saturday night. The Wildcats scored 35 points and had over 400 yards of total offense.
Statistically, LSU was one of the best pass defenses in the country coming into this football game. Kentucky quarterback continues to grow every week and he showed up in a big way in this one. Minchey had over 40 dropbacks against one of the best pass defenses they will see all season and he stepped up to the challenge. Minchey did not turn the ball over, he took just one sack and had 246 passing yards.
We will talk about it when we get to our player spotlights, but the wide receivers stepped up for Minchey in this game. This contributed to Minchey completing 23-of-36 pass attempts and multiple really difficult catches to bring in. The performance for this passing game is extremely encouraging moving forward. Kentucky and Ole Miss are the only offenses that have exploited the Tigers defense this season.
The running game was on for the Wildcats early in this one, as their first play from scrimmage was a career-long 77 yard gain for CJ Baxter on a duo concept. Baxter led the way with 123 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Kentucky had 155 total rushing yards, which is the most they have allowed in a game all season. And we of course cannot talk about the running game without mentioning Minchey, who got a tush push touchdown right before half to take the lead and ran in the game winning two-point play.
Kentucky's offensive line has continued to be a strength of this football team. Minchey had plenty of clean pockets and they allowed just one sack on the season. This group has continued to gel each week, and that is a dangerous LSU defensive line with Princewill Umanmielen who was the nation's sack leader heading into this game. Offensive line coach Cutter Leftwich deserves a ton of credit for how he has coached this group up.
We have spoke on it multiple times, but Kentucky is just extremely good at what they do. The pre snap movement, the formation and personnel versatility will continue to be a headache for every defense that they face. This offensive scheme just constantly forces the defense to communicate like professionals do. They are going to find ways to generate yards and score points moving forward.
Will Stein did it again, back-to-back walk off two-point conversions for the win. This team is a reflection of their head coach, he coaches with ultimate confidence and his team plays that way. The Wildcats never flinch in these football games and they just find ways to make big plays in big moments. Kentucky has legitimately entered the College Football Playoff conversation after this win.
