Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel died Tuesday following an in-pitch collision during Monday's game, the team announced. He was 30.
In the closing seconds of Tenerife's game against Andorra, de Miguel was involved in a brutal collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono around midfield.
Owono was immediately handed a red card and began walking off the pitch. De Miguel initially laid with his head and knees on the grass before turning onto his back. He then became motionless, resulting in an opposing player immediately calling to the sideline for help. Once Owono realized the severity of the situation, he stopped walking off the field and turned back to check on de Miguel. Owono faces a suspension for the collision.
Additionally, Spanish police have reportedly opened an investigation into the situation looking at a possible involuntary manslaughter charge, per ABC News.
The match did not continue following the incident. The match was tied 2-2 at the time play was suspended. De Miguel was transferred to a hospital and was initially deemed " stable despite the severity of his condition ," Tenerife said in a statement after the game. Later in the day, however, the team said de Miguel's condition had "worsened neurologically."
