Former LSU Edge Jack Pyburn, primary plaintiff in Louisiana NCAA eligibility case, reportedly staying in NFL after being claimed by Chiefs off waivers

Jack Pyburn, the primary plaintiff in the Louisiana lawsuit that is shaking up NCAA eligibility, is staying in the NFL after all.

The rookie edge rusher was claimed by the Kansas City Chiefs off waivers on Monday, after being released from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as part of roster cuts the day before. As a result, Pyburn in staying in the NFL rather than returning to college, his agents told ESPN's Adam Schefter .

Per Schefter, Pyburn has told LSU that he's withdrawing his claim to the temporary restraining order that would've allowed him to tap into the NCAA's new "five-for-five" model . Members of the high school class of 2022 were excluded from the NCAA's new system, leading many to use the courts to obtain eligibility instead.

Pyburn spent one year at LSU after starting his college career at Florida. He signed with the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in May, though his spot on the final roster was far from guaranteed.

Initially, the outside linebacker was reportedly planning to use the added year of eligibility to return to LSU — one of several plaintiffs in the case using the ruling to join the Tigers. Several of those plaintiffs, like Pyburn, had signed professional contracts before trying to return to college.

Pyburn has a couple of good reasons for staying in the NFL. For one, he is likely to get some playing time in Kansas City. The Chiefs are in need of depth at outside linebacker.

For another, he would be coming back to an increasingly hostile environment, as the SEC and other conferences crack down on pro players returning to college. LSU has found itself in a feud with its own conference as a result of Lane Kiffin's recruiting approach.

Yahoo Sports reported Monday that the SEC is planning on taking drastic steps to counter LSU signing former pro athletes. Taking a chance on success in the NFL may be an easier route for Pyburn, rather than risk eligibility that can be taken away in an instant.
