Eintracht Frankfurt have officially completed the signing of French defender Lilian Brassier from Stade Rennes, adding an experienced left-footed center-back to a defensive unit that endured another difficult afternoon in Saturday's Bundesliga opener. The 26-year-old has signed a long-term contract through 2031. Sky Germany reports Frankfurt will pay Rennes an initial €8.5m transfer fee, with potential bonuses capable of increasing the final sum.

Brassier arrives after another difficult defensive afternoon

Frankfurt opened the 2026/27 Bundesliga campaign with a 3-3 draw away at Union Berlin on Saturday. Younes Ebnoutalib's hat-trick appeared to have placed Adi Hütter's side in control at 3-1, but Frankfurt failed to protect the two-goal advantage. The striker's individual achievement nevertheless could not conceal another concerning defensive performance.

Frankfurt conceded all three Union goals from set-piece situations and increasingly struggled to deal with the hosts' direct pressure as the match progressed. The problems were particularly noteworthy given the defensive concerns that had already emerged during preseason. Brassier set to replace Theate on left side

The defender is expected primarily to compete for the left center-back position alongside captain Robin Koch in Hütter's preferred back four, but could initially slide in at left-back for Bundesliga debutant Keita Kosugi, who endured a questionable first start.

Brassier arrives with substantial experience in French football. The Rennes academy graduate has already accumulated 161 Ligue 1 appearances despite being only 26. After beginning his development with Rennes, Brassier spent the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Valenciennes before moving to Brest. He established himself there as a regular and eventually accumulated 108 competitive appearances for the Breton club. A subsequent spell with Olympique Marseille produced another 12 appearances before Brassier returned to Rennes in January 2025.

He quickly re-established himself with his formative club. Brassier made 27 league appearances last season as Rennes finished sixth and secured Europa League qualification. He departs having accumulated 41 senior competitive appearances for the club that originally developed him. The Frankfurt move will constitute his first club experience outside France.

SGE Board Member for Sport Markus Krösche specifically emphasized the qualities Frankfurt believe Brassier can add in a club statement.

"With Lilian Brassier, we have been able to sign a physically strong and fast defender who contests duels with great intensity while also possessing significant dynamism," Krösche said. "We are convinced that Lilian will provide our defense with additional stability and quality."
