‘He was thrown into it and produced’: Schuster steps up on Premier League debut

Jannik Schuster was given an early introduction to Premier League football during Brentford's 1-1 draw with Sunderland – and the young defender rose to the challenge.

The 20-year-old summer signing from RB Salzburg was introduced after just 17 minutes at Gtech Community Stadium, replacing the injured Nathan Collins for his first competitive appearance for the Bees.

Thrust into a physical battle with Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey, Schuster quickly settled alongside Kristoffer Ajer and produced an assured display at the heart of Brentford's defence.

The Austria youth international made nine clearances during the contest – more than any other player on the pitch – as he dealt impressively with the visitors' attacking threat.

Schuster also demonstrated the composure and technical quality that convinced Brentford to bring him to west London during the summer.

He completed four of his six attempted long passes, showing his range of distribution as well as his defensive qualities on an encouraging first outing.

Head coach Keith Andrews was impressed with the youngster's response to being unexpectedly thrown into the action.

"It was an introduction for Jannik which I thought he relished," said Andrews.

"I think he wanted that battle and fight against Brobbey and then Isidor came on as well, and I think he stood up to that in a really mature way.

"It's not particularly a surprise. He's wired that way. He's an impressive young man and we were so keen to bring him here.

"Part of the decision to allow Ethan [Pinnock] to go was that we were confident in Jannik's ability in the short term.

"He was thrown into it today and he produced."

Alongside Schuster, Ajer continued his strong start to the campaign. After Matchweek 3, the Norwegian ranks second in the Premier League for clearances (25) and has won more aerial duels (16) than any other defender.

Vitaly Janelt also continued his impressive early-season form by opening the scoring for Brentford.

The midfielder, who signed a new contract until the summer of 2030 in January, now has two goals this term and ranks joint-top in the Premier League for interceptions and joint-third for tackles.

Janelt's strike looked set to maintain Brentford's perfect home record before Enzo Le Fée converted an 82nd-minute penalty to earn Sunderland a point.

Both teams also had goals disallowed following VAR interventions, while Le Fée struck the woodwork during an eventful contest.

The result extends Brentford's unbeaten start to the 2026/27 campaign and, while Andrews felt his side only truly found their rhythm after the break, Schuster's performance provided another significant positive.

With Collins forced off early, Brentford needed their summer signing to step up sooner than expected.

It was an unexpected opportunity – and one Schuster grasped.
