With the Ballon d'Or race heating up ahead of the ceremony in London later this month, Lamine Yamal and Harry Kane have emerged as the two main candidates.

In a recent interaction with COPE, though, Spanish football legend David Silva has backed Fabian Ruiz to win the Ballon d'Or for his excellent performances for Spain and PSG.

In the same interview, Silva also talked about the La Liga title race, notably issuing a stark warning to Real Madrid.

When asked about the title race, Silva offered his view as to whether or not Real Madrid can catch up with Barcelona, with the club already trailing the Catalans by six points.

The former Man City superstar noted that it will be difficult for Real Madrid to keep up if Barcelona continue their current run of form.

"If Barça continues like this, it's impossible," he said (h/t Mundo Deportivo ).

They're playing at a very high level and have been playing very well for several years now with this coach, and they've strengthened their squad very well. If they continue at this level, they'll have no rivals."

Barcelona have indeed look unstoppable this season, winning all their matches while scoring goals for fun.

That being said, Silva reminded everyone that Real Madrid should never be ruled out, as they have a tendency to always bounce back.

"You can never count them out because they have great players and if they stay close until the end of the league, they can fight," he said.

But the Spaniard concluded by stating that Barcelona, at this level, will be very difficult to stop, even if Real Madrid manage to maintain a winning form.

"But I insist, if Barça continues at this level, I don't think so, " he concluded.

Silva's comments come just ahead of the resumption of club football, with Real Madrid slated to take on Villarreal this weekend, a game where coach Jose Mourinho will face a severe shortage of centre-backs and could be forced to make some unwanted changes.
