After getting fired last month, former Baylor head coach Dave Aranda is reportedly on the verge of getting a new job.
CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz reported that LSU is "working" to hire Aranda in "an analyst-type role" under head coach Lane Kiffin. Aranda, who previously served as LSU's defensive coordinator from 2016 to 2019, is currently in Baton Rouge for negotiations.
Baylor fired Aranda after the team fell to 4-3 this season with a 25-24 loss to Kansas on Oct. 24. During his six-plus years at the helm, he led the Bears to a 40-40 record, highlighted by a 12-2 finish in 2021 that included a Big 12 championship. The team ended that year ranked No. 5 in the AP Top 25, its highest year-end ranking in program history.
Known for his defensive acumen, Aranda played a key role in helping LSU go 15-0 and win the national championship in 2019. If he returns to the Tigers, he would be back on the same staff as former head coach Ed Orgeron, who now works as a special assistant for recruiting and defense.
LSU's defense is already strong this year, allowing just 16.0 points and 258.1 yards per game. Adding Aranda's input would make the Tigers even more dangerous as they chase a national title.
In its first year under Kiffin, LSU is currently No. 14 in the College Football Playoff rankings and is bringing a 6-2 record into Saturday's showdown against No. 5 Alabama (6-2).
