Ducks land in CFP rankings despite rocky season
A win over Northwestern has the Ducks ranked, but on the outside looking in on the current 12-team playoff.
Oregon football's season hasn't worked out the way it expected. But the Ducks (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) were ranked in the first College Football Playoff rankings.
Oregon came in at No. 23 in the initial rankings, revealed live on ESPN on Tuesday. Dan Lanning's team is on the outside looking in at the 12-team playoff, one season before a 24-team playoff is set to likely go into effect.
The No. 23 Ducks are coming off a confidence-boosting win over Northwestern, heading on the road to face No. 12 Ohio State (6-2, 4-1) this Saturday. That matchup originally included the preseason Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the AP poll.
But in this chaotic college football season, the Buckeyes are reeling after a road loss to No. 20 USC.
Other Big Ten teams in this week's CFP rankings include No. 19 Iowa, No. 8 UCLA and No. 4 Indiana.
