Andy Reid decries borderline false start that took would-be game-winning Chiefs TD off the board vs. Broncos
Reid described the fateful false start as "one man's opinion."
For a moment Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs thought they had a game-winning touchdown against the Denver Broncos.
Patrick Mahomes hit Rashee Rice for a go-ahead score as the game clock hit zero for what looked like a 30-28 Kansas City victory.
But Kansas City's celebration was short-lived.
A flag was on the field. Officials called Chiefs right tackle Jaylon Moore for a false start, and the touchdown was taken off the board. The Chiefs were backed up five yards, and had to run their play again, this time from the 6-yard line instead of the 1.
This time, the Broncos defense made a stop with a sack of Patrick Mahomes to end the game.
Here's a closer look at the fateful final penalty.
Moore's right hip moved slightly, and he looked to his left toward Mahomes as the play clock ticked down.
It's a movement that happens countless times each Sunday and doesn't get called. Sometimes it does, and this time it was during the highest-leverage moment of Week 8. And it cost the Chiefs a win in a 28-24 victory for the Broncos .
Chiefs coach Andy Reid wasn't convinced about the call. He described it as "one man's opinion."
"I didn't see it," Reid said in his postgame news conference. "That's one man's opinion. I saw him move his head, but I didn't see a false start."
Regardless of Reid's opinion of the call, the result for Kansas City was relinquishment of the division lead in the AFC West. The Broncos leave Sunday's win at 6-2, a half-game ahead of the 5-2 Chiefs.
The two teams have split their season series, and the race for the division title is shaping up to be a tight one down the season's second-half stretch.
