Jets need to stay patient with rookie D'Angelo Ponds

The New York Jets need to stay patient with the development of rookie cornerback D'Angelo Ponds.

· 258 words

The New York Jets were expected to receive significant contributions from their 2026 NFL Draft class. Through Week 6, it's been a mixed bag. No. 2 overall edge David Bailey is getting up-and-down results while generally being impressive. Fellow first-round picks in Tight end Kenyon Sadiq has been hot-and-cold, and receiver Omar Cooper Jr. recently got back from injury .

One rookie who has made almost no impact whatsoever is cornerback D'Angelo Ponds. The 50th overall selection has played just 34 defensive snaps.

The Jets need to stay patient with Ponds' development despite the current frustrations.

Ponds has not maximized his limited opportunities. In fact, the former Indiana standout has done the opposite. Currently, Ponds' 26.7 grade via Pro Football Focus ranks 163rd (dead last) among all 163 CBs to play any defensive snaps in 2026. He was the team's lowest-graded defensive player versus the New England Patriots in Week 6 (26.4).

Ponds has been whistled for two penalties in limited action. He's given up two explosive passing plays to the opposition, for gains of 21 and 39. There's good reasons why he continues to play behind starting nickelback Jarvis Brownlee Jr.

Ponds' offseason development was hampered by a training camp injury. The versatile DB didn't even make his regular-season debut until Week 3. It's extremely difficult for a rookie to be thrown into the fire after missing crucial preseason reps. That's what Ponds is currently dealing with, and his trial by fire is occuring weekly.
