Jonathan Taylor's Potential Trade Timeline Updated in New NFL Rumors amid Colts' Fire Sale
The Indianapolis Colts have reportedly taken "plenty of calls" on several players, including three-time Pro Bowl running back Jonathan Taylor, amid their fire sale, but the current plan is to wait until after their home game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday to make any determination about potential deals.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, that means the fates of Taylor, wide receiver Josh Downs and defensive tackle Grover Stewart will be decided sometime early next week:
The 2-6 Colts have already traded left guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2027 third-round pick and 2028 fifth-round pick and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2027 fourth-round pick.
The Colts have already parted ways with general manager Chris Ballard, ending his tenure after nine seasons. Assistant GM Ed Dodds has taken over on an interim basis.
The rebuild is on in Indianapolis, which is playing out the string at this point. The Colts have lost four straight games, capped by a 42-7 road loss to the AFC South-leading Jacksonville Jaguars last week.
At this point, it hard to believe that Taylor will be around much longer, although the Colts are apparently holding out hopes for a massive deal.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that they are hoping for a "Christian McCaffrey" return, referencing when the Carolina Panthers traded the star running back to the San Francisco 49ers in 2022 for four picks (2023 second, third and fourth-rounders and a 2024 fifth-rounder).
The four-time 1,000-yard rusher and two-time league touchdown leader has amassed 812 yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns in eight games in his seventh NFL season.
ESPN's Adam Schefter previously reported that the Denver Broncos, New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers have interest in Taylor.
Wide receiver Josh Downs, who has already requested a trade, is in the final year of his rookie contract and would certainly appear on his way out at this point. Downs has 30 catches for 330 yards and a touchdown through eight games. He had career-highs of 72 receptions for 803 yards and five TD in 2024.
Stewart is in his 10th season (all with the Colts). He has 26 tackles, three quarterback hits and a half-sack in eight games. Stewart is in the final season of his three-year, $39 million contract .
"Stewart might be a little tougher to deal, since his base salary this year is $11.74 million, so an acquiring team would need to be able to fit about half that under its salary cap," ESPN's Dan Graziano wrote. But there are enough teams looking for interior linemen that he likely finds a new home at some point in the next week."
Ultimately, multiple Colts are likely playing their last games in Indianapolis on Sunday, when they host Dallas at 1 p.m. ET.
