Saints look to reverse an ugly history against the Browns this Sunday
The New Orleans Saints must step up and get a win against the Cleveland Browns in Week 9. Here's a look at series history between the two teams.
After a Week 8 bye, the New Orleans Saints return to action on Sunday when they host the Cleveland Browns . The Saints stumble in with a 2-5 record but still very much in the NFC South race. Cleveland enters with a surprising 5-3 mark, playing their third consecutive game on the road. This will be only the 21st meeting between the Saints and Browns franchise. Here's a look at who holds the edge in the series between the teams.
Last meeting: 2024 in New Orleans (Saints 35-14)
These teams were actually division opponents for one year in 1968, the second year of existence for New Orleans. It was in the NFL Century Division, two years before the AFL-NFL merger. Cleveland dominated this short series at the beginning. The Browns won the first eight times these teams faced, with five of those matchups in New Orleans.
The Saints finally broke their eight-game losing streak against the Browns in 1984 with a 16-14 triumph in Cleveland. The Saints followed that up three years later with a 28-21 win over the Browns in the Superdome. It was their first home win against Cleveland and the second of three straight wins over the Browns, their longest such streak. Since Cleveland rattled those eight consecutive wins to start this series, New Orleans actually has a 7-5 edge over the Browns but are a rather mediocre 4-4 against Cleveland all-time inside the Superdome.
New Orleans has won their last three matchups against the Browns, equaling their longest streak. Two of those games have been at home. The second of which was a 35-14 victory in 2024, the last time these teams met. It was both the largest margin of victory for the Saints against the Browns and the only time they'd scored over 30 points against them in 20 meetings.
Prior to this season, the Saints and Browns have met four times in November. Cleveland has won three of those games, with the only exception being that resounding New Orleans victory on November 17, 2024 in the last matchup between the two. The Saints hope to have that same fortune again this time around. New Orleans has yet to win a game in the Superdome this season, losing three straight at home between weeks 4-6. If the Saints have any hope of staying in the horrible NFC South race, they need to immediately reverse that trend against the Browns on Sunday.
