Chiefs Rookie CB Mansoor Delane Faces MRI After Right Shoulder Injury

Mansoor Delane barely had time to settle into his first NFL game before his night took a turn. The Kansas City Chiefs' rookie cornerback opened his career with an interception of the Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix , then left the game after landing awkwardly on his right shoulder.

Now the Chiefs are waiting on more information. Delane is set to undergo an MRI on Tuesday after X-rays came back negative, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. The early hope is that the sixth overall pick suffered a sprain rather than another major shoulder issue.

Delane's NFL debut could hardly have started better. On just his third defensive snap, he picked off Nix and gave the Chiefs an early takeaway. He stumbled after making the interception and landed on his right shoulder during the return.

Head coach Andy Reid did not have much to offer after the game.

"We're just gonna see where that goes from here."

That ended up being his only major moment of the night. Delane was ruled questionable to return before heading to the locker room. The Chiefs later confirmed he would not come back, leaving Kristian Fulton to take over his spot in the secondary.

The latest report from Garafolo provides a little more optimism. The X-rays showed that Delane's shoulder is stable, while the MRI is expected to give the Chiefs a clearer idea of the injury and his potential recovery timeline.

There is some added concern because this is not the first time Delane has dealt with trouble in that shoulder. The rookie missed time during OTAs and mandatory minicamp and was also sidelined early in training camp before returning during the preseason.

That history makes Tuesday's MRI particularly important. Former NFL team doctor David J. Chao also looked at video of the play and suggested Delane could be dealing with a right AC joint sprain. Chao noted that the rookie who went to the locker room, however, could potentially have returned with an injection. However, that was only an assessment from video, and the MRI remains the test that should provide the real answer.

The Chiefs made a major investment in Delane for a reason. The Chiefs moved up to No. 6 in the 2026 NFL Draft to select the LSU cornerback, expecting him to become an important piece of Steve Spagnuolo's defense.

Losing him for an extended stretch would create an immediate problem in a secondary that already has plenty riding on its younger players. Fulton is an obvious option for more snaps, while Kansas City also has rookies such as Jadon Canady and Christian Roland-Wallace available.

For now, there is no confirmed timetable. The Chiefs will have to wait for the MRI before deciding what Delane's status looks like for Week 2 against the Indianapolis Colts .
