Former Chargers RB Austin Ekeler works out for NFC team

Former Chargers running back Austin Ekeler worked out for the Panthers on Wednesday.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz shared the news via X.

Ekeler will have a shot at joining a team in 2026 after not signing with a club before the season began.

The Panthers desperately need depth after placing Jonathan Brooks on injured reserve following surgery for a core/groin injury.

Brooks is expected to miss at least six weeks. After Brooks, the Panthers have Chuba Hubbard , who is the clear RB1 and AJ Dillon , who has eight rushing attempts for 25 yards through the first two games.

Ekeler could certainly boost the Panthers' running game. The 31-year-old is known for his versatility and dual-threat ability.

With the Chargers , Ekeler led the NFL in scrimmage touchdowns in 2021 (20 total) and 2022 (18 total).

Ekeler spent his first seven seasons with the Chargers. He played the 2024 and 2025 seasons with the Commanders.
