Falcons' throwback logo will not feature stripes from viral social media post
Atlanta's post about its throwback logo drew jokes and criticism about its similarity to Nazi symbolism.
The Atlanta Falcons will take the field Sunday with a throwback logo on their helmets — but not the design that went viral.
As part of their throwback uniforms, the Falcons will bring back a black falcon logo that the team used for more than four decades, starting in the 1960s.
To promote the throwbacks, Atlanta made a social media post showing the design, captioning that it was the team's new profile picture. The post incorporated the throwback logo with a background of red with black, gold and cream stripes, which mimics the striping on the team's retro helmets.
But people online quickly pointed out how the combination of the colors and the black logo evoked the Nazi flag, leading to satirical jokes.
The post is still up on the Falcons' social media, but is no longer the team's profile picture; that change appeared to take place Thursday, after the initial social media reaction. The new profile picture shows a helmet with the retro logo, but without the striping.
The Falcons declined to comment to ESPN about the issue, and the NFL did not respond to a request for comment from the Associated Press .
Atlanta will wear the throwback logos as they host the San Francisco 49ers for Week 7.
