Commanders WR Terry McLaurin out for the season after suffering knee injury in loss to 49ers
Terry McLaurin's left knee gave out on him as he was running a route on Monday night, and he was carted off the field.
McLaurin suffered a torn patellar tendon in the Washington Commanders' 23-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night , head coach Dan Quinn announced. As a result, he will miss the rest of the season.
"I had a chance to speak to him last night on the plane, and again after testing today," Quinn said. "I'm gutted for him."
McLaurin was running a route near the end of the first quarter of Monday's matchup at Levi's Stadium when he suddenly fell near the sideline. Replay showed that McLaurin's left knee gave out on him and buckled as he was planting to the outside.
He remained down on the field for quite some time in front of the Commanders' bench, clearly in pain. A cart eventually came out for him. He hopped up into the back of the vehicle under his own power with his entire left leg in a full air cast, and players from both teams saw him off.
The Commanders quickly ruled him out with a knee injury, and Quinn said after the game that they feared the injury was significant. Now, after an MRI on Tuesday, McLaurin will have to undergo season-ending surgery.
McLaurin had one catch for 27 yards before he went down on Monday night. He'll finish the season, his eighth in the league with the Commanders, with 230 receiving yards and one touchdown.
The injury comes at a tough time for the Commanders. They fell to 1-4-1 on the season after Monday's loss in Santa Clara, which has them last in the NFC East. Though the division is still wide open — remarkably, nobody from the division has won a game in the past two weeks — losing a target like McLaurin is going to make things much more difficult for quarterback Jayden Daniels the rest of the way.
The Commanders are off in Week 7, and will return to take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 1.
