Giants' Cam Skattebo thought about retirement after season-ending leg injury: 'Do I really want to do this?'
Skattebo broke his right fibula and dislocated his right ankle in Week 8 last season.
Cam Skattebo said he thought about walking away from football after suffering a broken right fibula and dislocated right ankle in Week 8 last season.
"I would say the first month was kind of like, 'Damn. Do I really want to do this?'," Skattebo told "Up and Adams" host Kay Adams . "It was seven games. I was like, 'You know, I got to go back and play.'"
The New York Giants running back said that he entered the NFL last season with a mindset that if he ever experienced a major injury, he would retire. That wasn't the case as the 24-year-old is 100% recovered and looking forward to the team's Week 1 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
"Coming out of college, going into the NFL, I think I gave myself one rule, and it was if I ever got a major injury, I was done playing," Skattebo said. "And that happened seven games into my career. So, it kind of sucked."
As Skattebo made progress in his recovery, he was already eyeing the 2026 season. During a fan event in May, he told a crowd of Giants fans that he would be "ready to go" for Week 1 against the Cowboys and predicted a 300-carry, 2,000-yard season over 17 games.
In eight games last season, Skattebo rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns, while also making 24 catches for 207 yards and two scores.
Skattebo said that the time away from the field not only helped him physically as he went through rehab, but also mentally with the amount of time he had to himself over the past 10 months.
"That gave me an extra step of finding that deep place, coming out of a hole that I didn't know I could come out of," Skattebo said. "I'm appreciative of that and I'm excited to see what I can build off of it."
