Green Bay Packers: Jordan Love admits he’d do one thing differently on the failed Vikings sneak

Jordan Love threw for 387 yards on Sunday. He ran a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-1 in the fourth quarter and gained nothing.

The Green Bay Packers led 22-10 in the third quarter and lost 39-22 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Minnesota scored 22 points in the fourth quarter. Green Bay scored none.

Jordan Love says he would have gone with the other play call

"Yeah, I ran a QB sneak," Love said. "You know, they did a good job stopping it. You know, I think there's some stuff I could have done better with my operation and even, you know, with the play call. You know, we had two plays called right there. Went with the quarterback sneak. Thought we could get it, and we didn't."

He walked through the mechanics when asked what he could have done differently on a play with so few moving parts.

"I think QB sneaks, whenever you've got the gaps filled, trying to find those open gaps," Love said. "Maybe let the rush come and try to find one of those open gaps and dive forward instead of maybe just going right up the middle. So there are some things you can do differently right there. We'll look at it."

"And then I think, like I said, we had two plays called right there," he said. "And obviously the QB sneak didn't work. Hindsight, wish I would have went with the other play."

Love said he checked to the sneak because he believed in it. "Just thought we can get it," he said. "We've ran a lot of QB sneaks in the past. I felt confident that we'd be able to get it."

The 387 yards came with four sacks and a fumble

Love finished 21-of-42 and was sacked four times for 34 yards. One of the sacks came loose and Minnesota recovered it, and LaFleur described that one as a protection bust rather than a quarterback error.

"I know one of them was a protection breakdown," the head coach said. "We called a certain jet. I don't think he adjusted the protection. We slid one way. We had nobody for the guy in the B-gap. So that's a bust."

Aaron Banks did not play. "I think he's made progress, but he wasn't ready yet," LaFleur said of the left guard.

Green Bay was also without Micah Parsons , who is on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, and Josh Jacobs, who is on the Commissioner's Exempt List .

"You're playing this defense, you know it's going to be pressure," Love said. "You know that's part of it. So, like I said, you know, we'll look back at the film, but there's a lot of just missed opportunities, which I wish, a couple of plays I wish we could get back."

Green Bay scored on its first drive of the game and did not score after the third quarter. Minnesota put up 22 in the fourth, three touchdowns inside a span of 2 minutes and 39 seconds.

"I definitely think you look at that fourth quarter, they got the momentum and they started rolling," Love said. "And that's where we kind of fell apart. And, you know, I think obviously being in this away environment, the noise, everything, everybody, the communication has got to be 100%."

He rejected the idea that Minnesota did anything new to cause it.

"It's not like they changed the looks a crazy amount," Love said. "They're running the same stuff. So we just got to find ways to execute."

A reporter asked whether the postgame language starts to ring hollow when it matches what he said after losses last season.

"No, it just comes down, honestly, it just comes down to there's a couple plays here and there in the game that we've got to go out there and make," Love said. "If we do that, it's a different game. Unfortunately, we didn't do that today. The message is still the message. We'll get back to work, continue to keep working. That's all we can do."

Green Bay is at the New York Jets on Sunday at noon CT.
