Cowboys' Jerry Jones Hints at More Potential Trade Talks After Joey Porter Jr. Deal with Steelers
The Dallas Cowboys may not be done dealing after swinging a trade for cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
The Dallas Cowboys may not be done dealing after swinging a trade for cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
Team owner Jerry Jones said Wednesday on 105.3 The Fan that "the door is always open to get better." He added he's "never" of a mind to ignore ways for the Cowboys to improve:
Like wide receiver George Pickens in 2025, Porter joins Dallas in the final year of his rookie contract. Dallas applied the franchise tag to Pickens, so the team will have to sort out the futures of he and Porter at some point.
Jones didn't provide a clear answer when asked whether an extension for either player could be completed this season. Reading between the lines, it looks unlikely (via The Athletic's Jon Machota):
The Cowboys are 2-2 and have allowed the third-most yards in the league. So far, it's looking like a repeat of 2025, when an elite offense was canceled out by a porous defense.
From that standpoint, Dallas could benefit from another big trade. The team is running out of draft assets, though.
The Cowboys have three picks in the first six rounds of the 2027 draft, and they gave up their 2028 second-rounder to get Porter.
Especially when accounting for the cost of extensions for Porter and Pickens, the front office needs to balance out the expensive veterans with younger cost-controlled talent. That can't happen when Dallas keeps trading away picks.
Perhaps a trade emerges that's too good to pass up. Absent that, Jones would be wise to keep one eye on the outlook beyond 2026.
