NFL all-free agency team: Kenneth Walker and the 15 best signings, trades in 2026 (so far)
Which newcomers have had the most significant impact for their new teams?
The NFL offseason is different from that of other sports. Sometimes it takes just calculated spending on players to change a team, with quality becoming a lot more important than quantity. The key is getting good return on investment in free agency, whether a veteran is acquired through signing or trade.
The teams that worekd well in the open market in 2026 and seeing the fruits of their labor with results early in the 2026 regular season. Starting with the two best teams in the AFC West and getting into the rest, here's looking at who's provided the most significant impact through the quarter term.
The Raiders waited until April, weeks before drafting Fernando Mendoza No.1 overall, to sign Cousins. Some scoffed at them giving him a five-year, $172 million deal, but in reality, they got a break from the Falcons . Las Vegas is on the hook for only $11.3 million in guaranteed money, with Atlanta still paying Cousins $8.7 million.
There also was skepticism of new offensive-minded coach Klint Kubiak sticking to his word and sitting in Mendoza and starting Cousins. No one is questioning that plan now with Cousins producing so well in the system, a big reason for the surprise 3-1 start. Mendoza might get rookie starts later, but those might come only if the Raiders fade out of the playoff picture or Cousins gets hurt.
Running back: Kenneth Walker III, Chiefs
Walker gets the unofficial award for free-agent pickup of the year. He's not the first Super Bowl MVP (Larry Brown, anyone?) to parlay that into a big contract elsewhere. The Chiefs splurged on him quickly with a three-year, $45 million deal to take him away from the Seahawks .
Through four games before the Chiefs' Week 5 bye, Walker leads the NFL with 537 rushing yards, averaging 134.3 yards per game and and also a league-high 6.2 yards per carry. He also has six combined TDs and leads everyone with his 621 scrimmage yards.
There's no doubt Walker has provided the needed ingredient to get the Chiefs' offense back on track: A power running game to take pressure off Patrick Mahomes and better open up the passing game. Walker, even if he cools down a bit from that hot start, will keep providing critical balance and explosiveness.
Given Evans' age (33), the 49ers got him to leave the Buccaneers after 12 seasons on a reasonable three-year, $42.5 million deal. Although he's battled injury during the Niners ' 4-0 start, he has played in every game, catching 17 of 24 targets for 213 yards and 2 TDs.
Those numbers aren't big, but the impact of his downfield and red zone presence has been important in facilitating matchups for Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle and Deebo Samuel. Evans remains dangerous in goal-to-go situations and some point, and once healthier, he'll deliver more to match the elite deep passing of Brock Purdy.
WEEK 5 PREDICTIONS: Against the spread | Straight up
Likely has had a hot start for the Giants , who signed him to a three-year $40 million deal in March so he would follow his former Ravens coach John Harbaugh to New York. He was big right away with Jaxson Dart, as his 8 catches for 72 yards and 2 TDs was key to taking down the rival Cowboys in Week 1.
After a couple of games struggling to connect with Dart injury replacement Jameis Winston, Likely had 7 catches for 66 yards to help beat the Cardinals in Week 4. He'll remain an important factor playing off star No. 1 receiver Malik Nabers.
Offensive tackle: Rasheed Walker, Panthers
Walker hasn't been a top-flight blocker, but it's difficult to find left tackles in free agency. The former Packer has at least solidified a key position, along with rookie first-round tackle Monroe Freeling, while both Ikem Ekonwu and Taylor Moton are out with injuries. There should be some credit for protecting Bryce Young, who leads the NFL with 1,268 passing yards through Week 4.
The Raiders couldn't keep Parham at guard after breaking the bank for new center Tyler Linderbaum. The Jets took advantage by signing him to a two-year, $20 million deal as part of their massive offensive overhaul. Parham has been strong all-around on the left side.
The Lions lost Frank Ragnow to retirement after the 2024 season but have found a potential long-term answer in '26. When Detroit traded running back David Mongtomery to Houston, they acquired Scruggs and two draft picks. Scruggs has fit in well blocking for a prolific running now featuring Jahmyr Gibbs without Montgomery.
Defensive tackle: Dexter Lawrence, Bengals
Knowing they would lose Trey Hendrickson in free agency, the Bengals had to make a corresponding move to help their defensive line. That came via trading No. 10 overall pick to the Giants to address the inside. He has three sacks to keep up his dominant inside pass rush and also has helped vs. the run.
Mafe also left the Super Bowl champion Seahawks to become a more regular pass rusher in Cincinnati, signing a three-year, $60 million deal. Maye has a couple of sacks for defensive coordinator Al Golden, who now has replenished talent to better execute his scheme.
The Raiders also spent well on defense, getting Dean from the Eagles on a three-year, $36 million deal. In four games, Dean leads the league with 3 forced fumbles. He has 1.5 sacks and has been great in coverage over the middle. He's doing everything for defensive coordinator Rob Leonard, including giving Maxx Crosby a co-leader on the field.
McDuffie has been much better than their other new starter, fellow former Chief Jaylen Watson. The Rams needed McDuffie to be a dominant cover man after giving up four draft picks to acquire him from Kansas City, including No. 29 in the first round in '26. He's been a shutdown force in coverage with a league-high 7 passes defended and an interception.
Fitzpatrick was acquired in a rare intra-divisoin trade with the Jets giving up only a seventh-round pick to get him. New York then gave him a three-year, $40 million extension. The former Steeler has become a star again in Aaron Glenn's secondary since healthy for the past two games. He ended the Jets' 20-game interception drought in Week 4 vs. the Bears.
Stout has a great last name given the strength of his leg. He joined Likely and a few others in making the move from Baltimore with Harbaugh after getting a three-year, $12.5 million contract. Stout is averaging 50.6 yards per punt and has put 9 of his 20 attempts inside the 20.
Gay has gone 10-for-10 on field goals, behind only the Vikings' Will Reichard (12-for-12) and the Colts' Spencer Shrader (11-for-11). He's made all 9 of his extra point tries and 6 of his field goals have come from 40 yards or longer. Not bad for a guy making only $1.6 million on a one-year deal.
The former Chiefs and 49ers wide receiver was signed to a modest one-year, $2.5 million contract. With Jayden Reed going down again with injury, Moore has been huge on both punts and kickoffs. He has averaged 16.0 yards on punt returns (No. 2 in the league) and been solid with 27.6 yards per kickoff return.
