Christian Gonzalez, Patriots Reportedly Agree to Historic Contract to Be NFL's Highest-Paid CB

The standoff between Christian Gonzalez and the New England Patriots came to an end on the eve of their opening game of the 2026 NFL season against the Seattle Seahawks in a Super Bowl 60 rematch.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz , the Patriots and Gonzalez have agreed to a four-year, $135 million extension that includes $102 million in guaranteed money.

Gonzalez's new contract makes him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. His deal surpasses the four-year, $132 million (at least $101 million guaranteed) extension Devon Witherspoon got from the Seahawks last month.

Gonzalez is also one of 10 defensive players making at least $100 million guaranteed.

The 23-year-old was previously signed through the 2027 season after New England exercised the fifth-year option on his rookie contract.

He's the latest standout corner to receive a hefty deal, as the Seattle Seahawks agreed to a four-year extension worth $132 million with Devon Witherspoon on Aug. 15.

Gonzalez's new contract doesn't come as a large surprise, as Patriots owner Robert Kraft previously confirmed that the team made him a historic offer.

"We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person, and that's why we've made an offer to him to make him the highest-paid player to ever play that position in the NFL," Kraft said on July 25, per ESPN's Mike Reiss . "And coincidentally, it is the highest contract in Patriots franchise history. So we're glad we drafted him, he's developed here, and we hope he'll be with us for a long time."

Gonzalez also expressed a desire to sign a new deal with New England on June 9.

"Of course, I want to be here. I've said this multiple times," Gonzalez told reporters . "I've been drafted here. I want to be rewarded as a Patriot. I love this town. I love this city. So of course I want to be here."

The Patriots initially selected Gonzalez with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

While he appeared to be starting his career on a high note, his promising rookie season came to an end after just four games due to a shoulder injury .

Gonzalez picked up right where he left off during his sophomore season in 2024, appearing in 16 contests and earning a Second Team All-Pro selection . He finished with 11 passes defended and two interceptions.

During his 2025 campaign, he served as a key piece on a Patriots defense that ranked No. 4 in the NFL by allowing a mere 18.8 points per game.

Gonzalez racked up 69 tackles, 10 passes defended and one tackle for loss across 14 games last season. He allowed a mere 64.4 passer rating when targeted, according to Pro Football Focus .

His stellar season extended to the playoffs, recording seven passes defended in four postseason games while helping New England advance to the Super Bowl.

As the Patriots look to remain a contender in 2026, they secured Gonzalez's future with the team.
