New Seahawks Rumors on Sam Darnold's Involvement in Brian Fleury's Hire as OC to Replace Kubiak

The Seattle Seahawks looped quarterback Sam Darnold into their process of hiring a new offensive coordinator, according to ESPN's Brady Henderson .

Henderson reported Wednesday that "Darnold was consulted during the search and supported" the choice of Brian Fleury to replace Klint Kubiak, who left to coach the Las Vegas Raiders.

The two-time Pro Bowler had some experience with Fleury thanks to his one season on the San Francisco 49ers in 2023. Fleury was the Niners' tight ends coach at the time.

Since reuniting, Darnold found the coach is putting his stamp on the offense while carrying over "a lot of the same stuff" from Kubiak's scheme.

"Fleury obviously coming from San Francisco, but a couple different wrinkles here and there," he said in June . "So it's been good that way to be able to get some of that same verbiage but just a couple different wrinkles, like I said. So it's been really good to be able to get some stuff that he's been doing with San Francisco the last couple years and how we incorporate that into our system into what we've been building on the past year."

Given how important he is to the franchise, it made sense to ensure Darnold would be on the same page with a new offensive coordinator out of the gate. The veteran signal-caller obviously didn't make the final call, and Seattle may have hired Fleury anyway if Darnold wasn't totally on board. Why start things on the wrong foot, though?

It sounds like the transition to a different play-caller for the offense is going as well as fans could've hoped for.
