Jacoby Brissett Reportedly Restructures Contract Ahead of Ravens Trade, New NFL Rumors Reveal
Ahead of his rumored trade to the Baltimore Ravens, the Arizona Cardinals reportedly restructured quarterback Jacoby Brissett's contract on Thursday.
Ahead of his rumored trade to the Baltimore Ravens, the Arizona Cardinals reportedly restructured quarterback Jacoby Brissett's contract on Thursday.
According to ESPN's Field Yates , $2.7 million of Brissett's remaining $5.4 million salary this season was converted into a signing bonus, meaning the Ravens will owe him $2.7 million if the trade is completed today or $2.43 million if the trade is completed after that.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that the Ravens were finalizing a trade for Brissett, although it is not expected to become official until this coming weekend.
Baltimore's reported acquisition of Brissett comes amid a rash of injuries at the quarterback position for the Ravens.
After missing three games with an ankle injury, Lamar Jackson returned to start against the Buffalo Bills this past weekend, but on the Ravens' first offensive play from scrimmage, he suffered a thumb injury and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.
The injury required surgery and a trip to injured reserve. Head coach Jesse Minter admitted that the injury could "potentially" be season-ending.
On top of that, backup quarterback Tyler Huntley suffered a turf toe injury against the Bills, and he has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Baltimore turned to undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano under center with both Jackson and Huntley out, and he largely struggled in a 36-10 loss to the Bills.
Despite that, Fagnano will get his first career start on Thursday night when the Ravens host the Jacksonville Jaguars.
However, assuming the Brissett trade gets completed in the coming days, he figures to take on the starting role in Baltimore until and unless Jackson is able to return.
Brissett, 33, is an 11-year NFL veteran who has played for six different teams over the course of his career.
He has spent the past two seasons in Arizona, starting 20 of the 22 games he appeared in for the Cards.
Although Brissett went just 1-11 as the starter last season, he largely played well, completing 64.9 percent of his passes for 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
In eight starts this season, Brissett is 3-5, while completing 63.3 percent of his passing attempts for 1,719 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven picks.
Brissett was pulled during the Cardinals' game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, though, and Gardner Minshew threw three touchdown passes in the third quarter, as Arizona came from behind to beat Dallas 33-30 in overtime.
As a result of his performance, Minshew was named the new starter, while Brissett was dropped to third on the depth chart behind rookie Carson Beck.
The writing was on the wall for Brissett in Arizona at that point, but Baltimore offers an exciting, new opportunity, as the Ravens are still very much in the AFC playoff race with a record of 4-4.
