Pro Football Hall of Fame Makes Rule Changes to Selection Process After Bill Belichick Snub

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is overhauling its selection process after a controversial vote left Bill Belichick out of the 2026 class.

The Hall of Fame announced Friday that fewer people will be voting and fewer players will be inducted starting with the Class of 2027.

The changes will start with the selection committee, which will decrease from 50 to 25 voters and three non-voters.

Player finalists will drop from a maximum of 18 players, including up to three players who have been retired for 25 years, to 13 total players following the elimination of the separate "seniors" category.

Coaches and contributors were previously considered alongside seniors in a separate pool from modern-era players.

Voters will now consider one coach and one contributor alongside all players in a single 15-person pool of finalists.

The makeup of the selection committee, which previously included one selector from every NFL club, will also be changing.

The committee will now be made up of 27 at-large selectors and one Pro Football Writers of America representative.

The identities of the three non-voting members will rotate annually. All 28 members will meet at an in-person annual meeting, ending a six-year stretch of virtual meetings.

The new selection committee announced after the 50 previous members of the group are notified as to their future status, according to the HOF.

Hall of Fame president and CEO Jim Porter said in a statement there were "unintended biases" created by the previous voting structure, including "disparate skills of the individuals making the initial presentations of nominees for election at the annual meeting."

Initial presentations at the selection meeting will now be made by someone outside the selection committee going forward.

The Hall of Fame is also expanding who counts as a contributor, which was previously defined as someone who "made outstanding contributions to professional football in capacities other than playing or coaching."

The HOF will now allow voters to consider "a candidate's full football résumé that may include playing, coaching and other contributions to the sport" when selecting for the category.

Another notable change being made to the selection process is that candidates who make it to the final seven will not automatically be named finalists the following year.

Willie Anderson, Marshal Yanda and Terrell Suggs made it to the final seven of the 2026 voting process but will no longer be automatic finalists for 2027.

The retirement periods before eligibility remain one season for coaches and five for players, with no minimum requirement for contributors.

The 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class featured five players, the smallest group since 2025. First-timers eligible for the 2027 class include Ben Roethlisberger, Rob Gronkowski and Adrian Peterson.
