Bears get update on injured player who left practice in ‘significant discomfort’

Swift’s latest injury scare has the Bears watching closely with Week 1 approaching.

The NFL season is just around the corner, and the Chicago Bears are hoping running back D'Andre Swift's latest injury scare does not turn into a significant setback before their season opener.

Swift reportedly left Thursday's practice in "significant discomfort" while holding his midsection. The veteran running back was believed to be dealing with a cramp, providing some relief for the Bears as they await further evaluation.

Chicago is scheduled to have several days off before beginning its final preparations for the Sept. 13 opener against the Carolina Panthers. The timing gives Swift an opportunity to recover, and the Bears will be hoping the issue proves to be nothing more than a temporary problem.

Swift is entering his second season with Chicago after producing another impressive campaign in 2025. He appeared in 16 regular-season games and surpassed 1,000 rushing yards for the second time in his career.

The 27-year-old averaged 4.9 yards per carry while recording nine rushing touchdowns and another score through the air. His production has made him an important part of Chicago's offense, particularly with the team looking to build on its breakthrough season.

Swift's health will therefore be something to monitor closely over the coming days. While the initial indication that he was dealing with a cramp is encouraging, the Bears cannot afford to lose another key member of their running back room.

Bears already dealing with running back injury

Chicago is already without running back Kyle Monangai, who suffered a leg injury during practice on Aug. 16. Monangai is considered week-to-week and is reportedly doubtful to play in Week 1, although initial testing suggested the injury should not result in a long-term absence.

That makes Swift's status particularly important as the Bears prepare for the regular season. Avoiding another injury at the position would give Chicago a much-needed boost heading into its title defense.

The Bears are coming off their first NFC North championship since 2018 and will enter the new season with expectations significantly higher than they have been in recent years. Keeping Swift healthy could be a key part of their hopes of returning to the postseason and making another deep run.
