Sam Darnold ruled out with hip injury after only one drive, replaced by Drew Lock in Seahawks win

The Seattle Seahawks ' celebration over raising their Super Bowl banner and the start of a new season didn't last long Wednesday.

Quarterback Sam Darnold left the season-opening game against the New England Patriots after one series due to a hip injury. He was replaced by Drew Lock . Darnold went back to the locker room with athletic trainers before the Seahawks' second series started.

Late in the second quarter, Darnold was ruled out by the Seahawks for the rest of the game. After a slow start, Lock and Seattle made just enough plays to pull off a dramatic 13-10 win .

Darnold was not at the stadium for the rest of the game. He went to nearby Harborview Medical Center for a CT scan on his hip, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter . That test came back inconclusive, and he's set to undergo an MRI on Thursday. The Seahawks did rule out a hip fracture, but further specifics on his injury are not yet known.

Lock finished 16 of 22 for 187 yards passing and a 45-yard touchdown pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba .

On the play he was hurt, Darnold was sacked by Patriots end Dre'Mont Jones on a third down on the Seahawks' first drive. As the punt team came on, Darnold was trotting off with a noticeable limp. NBC said on the broadcast that no medical personnel was around Darnold as he came to the sideline, but shortly after he went to the blue medical tent.

After the Patriots punted, NBC showed Darnold limping badly on the sideline as Lock had his helmet on, ready to go in.

Darnold didn't miss a game last season and threw for 4,000 yards in the regular season, then played steady, solid football throughout the Seahawks' Super Bowl championship push. He became a great story of a highly drafted quarterback who was given up on by multiple teams.

As a new season started, another story was unfolding and it wasn't a positive one for the Seahawks or Darnold.
