Steelers news: Cam Heyward doesn't hold back about 'stupid' franchise tag

Cam Heyward has never been shy about speaking his mind. The Pittsburgh Steelers captain delivered another blunt assessment ahead of the 2026 season opener against the Atlanta Falcons . Speaking after practice, the veteran defensive tackle and NFLPA executive committee member labeled the NFL's franchise tag "stupid." He argued that the mechanism gives teams too much control over players' careers and earning power.

"It hampers palyers. Why should any team be able to take advantage of a player for one year? It's used in negotiations," Heyward said. "And I think between the player options, the franchise tags, the way they control rookies, I think it's kind of backwards."

His comments come as Pittsburgh approaches a familiar contract deadline. The Steelers traditionally stop negotiations once the regular season begins. Cornerback Joey Porter Jr is entering the final year of his contract . That adds another layer to the team's business decisions.

With Aaron Rodgers entering what is expected to be his final NFL season, Pittsburgh is aiming to make a deep postseason push. For Heyward, however, the mission extends beyond Week 1. He wants the Steelers to chase another Lombardi Trophy while continuing to challenge an NFL system he believes too often leaves players without enough leverage.
