The 5'11", 243-pound Mevis, nicknamed "The Thiccer Kicker," missed two field goals in his team's 37-34 overtime home loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday evening. He pulled a 50-yard attempt wide left in the first quarter, and Bills linebacker Gregory Rousseau blocked Mevis' game-winning 48-yard attempt in overtime.
Mevis was 5-of-9 on field goals this season, including 3-of-6 from 40-49 yards. He made all 14 of his extra point attempts.
The 24-year-old made his NFL debut with the Rams on Nov. 9, 2025 after L.A. benched kicker Joshua Karty.
The Rams ran into special teams issues last year. Of note, their regular-season game against the Philadelphia Eagles ended in Philly blocking a game-winning field goal and returning it for a Jordan Davis touchdown in a 33-26 victory.
Karty missed five of 15 field goal attempts and three of 26 extra points. The Rams eventually waived him. Per head coach Sean McVay to reporters , L.A. wanted to keep two kickers but ultimately ran into a "roster management" issue.
The Rams also waived their long snapper, Alex Ward, on Nov. 10.
Mevis did very well for L.A. last year, making 18-of-19 field goals (including playoffs) and all 23 extra points.
However, this year featured a tough start, and McVay was not happy with the kicking game.
"In the kicking game, especially with our PAT, field goal, not even close to good enough," McVay told reporters . "It cost us the game tonight."
McVay had reason to be upset with special teams overall, as L.A. also allowed Bills running back Ray Davis to return the opening kickoff 70 yards (Buffalo ended that ensuing drive with a field goal).
Now the Rams are moving to a former Jet (Mevis played with New York during the 2025 preseason before being waived) for the second straight year.
Grupe kicked for the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts from 2023-2025. He had made 86-of-105 field goals (81.9 percent) and 96-of-98 extra points. He is 19-of-27 from 50-plus with a long of 60 yards.
The 5'7", 156-pound Grupe signed a one-year deal with the Colts last March but got waived on August 30. The Jets claimed him off waivers the next day.
Now he gets a great chance with the 2-3 Rams, whose talent is certainly better than their record shows. They'll look to move to .500 on Sunday when they host the Arizona Cardinals.
