Is Christian Parker already in trouble? Jerry Jones says Cowboys DC isn’t ‘overwhelmed’ as Mike Pettine arrives
The Dallas Cowboys are changing how Christian Parker runs their defense.
The Dallas Cowboys are changing how Christian Parker runs their defense. Jerry Jones insists that does not mean the 32-year-old coordinator is in over his head.Parker will move from the sideline to the coaching box, while Dallas has hired former NFL head coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant. The changes come with the Cowboys sitting at 2-3 and ranking near the bottom of the NFL in several major defensive categories. Why are the Cowboys moving Christian Parker to the coaching box after five games?Jones confirmed the move Tuesday during his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. ESPN's Todd Archer also reported that Parker will call the defense from upstairs rather than the sideline. The timing makes the decision impossible to separate from Dallas' defensive results.Through five games, the Cowboys rank 31st in total defense at 395.4 yards allowed per game. They are also allowing 27.2 points per game, placing them near the bottom of the league in scoring defense.Their run defense has been even more vulnerable. Dallas has allowed an NFL-high 168.4 rushing yards per game and 5.1 yards per carry, according to figures cited by ClutchPoints.Jones did not try to sell those numbers as acceptable.“I'm obviously disappointed in the results so far,” Jones said Tuesday, according to Field Level Media. He did, however, push back on the idea that Parker has become overwhelmed in his first season as an NFL defensive coordinator.Moving upstairs gives Parker a different view of opposing formations and personnel. It is also not unprecedented in Dallas. Archer noted that former Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus made the same move last season when the defense struggled. What makes this change more significant is what Dallas did alongside it.The Cowboys did not simply change Parker's location on game day. They also added Pettine, a veteran defensive coach with experience as a coordinator for the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers. Pettine also served as head coach of the Cleveland Browns. That naturally raises another question about how much help Dallas believes Parker now needs. What does Mike Pettine’s arrival mean for Christian Parker and the Cowboys defense? The Cowboys are publicly presenting Pettine as support for Parker, not his replacement. There is also existing familiarity between the two coaches. Parker worked under Pettine as a defensive quality control coach with Green Bay in 2019 and 2020. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer also worked on the same New York Jets staff as Pettine.Jones said those relationships played a role in the hire.“You put that all together and you've got some work to do to putting that all in place relative to the challenges you have when you really get into the ballgames,” Jones told 105.3 The Fan.Schottenheimer also believes Pettine can contribute immediately.“Coming into the situation where he will be very comfortable and can help very quickly,” Schottenheimer said, according to Field Level Media.Pettine most recently worked in a support role under Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Minnesota is 5-0 and leads the NFL with 16 sacks, while also using the league's highest blitz rate.Dallas now gets Pettine before a particularly relevant matchup. The Cowboys travel to Green Bay for a Sunday night game against the Packers. Pettine previously served as Green Bay's defensive coordinator and coached current Cowboys defenders Kenny Clark and Rashan Gary during his time there.None of that means Parker has been replaced or formally demoted. Jones has explicitly defended him, and Parker remains the defensive coordinator. But Dallas is also not standing still after five games of poor defensive production. Parker is changing locations, Pettine is joining the staff and Jones has openly acknowledged his disappointment. The Cowboys may not be calling it a crisis. Their actions show they know something has to change.Stay updated with the latest Asian Games 2026 news, check the Asian Games medal tally and complete Asian Games schedule.Get the latest Sports News and Live updates.
