Jonathan Taylor Trade Cost Projected by NFL Insider, Compared to Christian McCaffrey Blockbuster
If the Indianapolis Colts end up trading running back Jonathan Taylor before the Nov. 10 deadline, they may not get a first-round draft pick.
If the Indianapolis Colts end up trading running back Jonathan Taylor before the Nov. 10 deadline, they may not get a first-round draft pick.
But they could get significant draft capital if a past high-profile deal is any indication.
ESPN's Adam Schefter pointed to the Carolina Panthers' 2022 trade of Christian McCaffrey as "the closest comp that we have right now" for what the Colts may get for Taylor. Schefter also said during his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show (3:25 mark), "I don't think they get a one."
The Panthers traded McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a second-round, third-round, fourth-round and fifth-round draft pick. McCaffrey was in his age-26 season in 2022, which is similar to the 27-year-old Taylor this season.
Taylor is also at the top of his game having just ran for 1,585 yards and a league-best 18 touchdowns last season. He is also leading the league with eight rushing touchdowns this year.
On Sunday, ESPN's Ian Rapoport and Schefter listed the Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings as teams that "are expected to consider" pursuing Taylor.
A bidding war could drive up the price for Indianapolis.
He also isn't a pure rental considering his contract runs through the 2028 campaign. Given his age and that deal, Taylor should be among the league's best running backs throughout the remainder of his contract and someone who could help any team that traded for him for the foreseeable future.
It just might cost that team a number of valuable draft picks.
