New NFL Rumors on Davis Webb's Hot Seat as Broncos Playcaller Under Sean Payton Amid Struggles
Davis Webb's status as the Denver Broncos' offensive playcaller reportedly could be in jeopardy if significant improvement is not shown in the near future.
Davis Webb's status as the Denver Broncos' offensive playcaller reportedly could be in jeopardy if significant improvement is not shown in the near future.
According to ESPN's Dan Graziano , "a lot of people" in the NFL believe Broncos head coach Sean Payton "won't wait too much longer" to take back the offensive playcalling duties from Webb.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler added that although he expects Webb to be given "more time," a change could be made if Denver's offense does not start living up to expectations.
Payton called the Broncos' offensive plays over each of his first three seasons as head coach, and he enjoyed solid success in that role with the 10th-ranked scoring offense in 2024 and the 10th-ranked unit in total offense last season.
The veteran head coach and one-time Super Bowl champion with the New Orleans Saints seemingly pushed all the right buttons for quarterback Bo Nix, who threw for 3,775 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions as a rookie in 2024, and followed that up with 3,931 yards, 25 touchdowns and 11 picks last season.
If not for Nix suffering a season-ending ankle injury in the Broncos' AFC Divisional Round playoff game win over the Buffalo Bills, they may very well have gone to the Super Bowl, as they mustered only seven points with backup Jarrett Stidham under center in a 10-7 loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.
Webb, who served as Denver's quarterbacks coach from 2023 to 2025, as well as their offensive passing game coordinator last season, was a hot coaching commodity this past offseason as a potential head coach and offensive coordinator.
In order to keep Webb in the fold, Denver promoted him to OC and gave him offensive playcalling responsibilities.
Early returns on that decision have not been good, as the 2-2 Broncos are 27th in the NFL in total offense and 27th in scoring offense with just 18.5 points per game.
On top of that, Nix is trending toward the worst season of his young career, as he is completing a career-low 60.0 percent of his passes for 819 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions through four games.
Part of the issue could be the tough defensive matchups the Broncos have drawn thus far with games against the Kansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers.
Things could perhaps get a bit easier against the winless Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, and there will be a great deal of pressure on Webb to produce a strong offensive performance in that game.
