The Green Bay Packers were 3.5-point favorites, per FanDuel Sportsbook . Top Packer fantasy football performers included Love, wideouts Matthew Golden and Christian Watson, running back Josh Jacobs and tight end Tucker Kraft. Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard stood out as well.
Exciting action started on the opening kickoff after Panthers linebacker Jackson Kuwatch stripped Packers kick returner Jackson Owen of the ball, which Carolina LB Nick Hampton recovered on the Green Bay 29-yard line.
Green Bay's defense hung tough, though, and forced a field goal. Ryan Fitzgerald knocked it home from 39 yards for the early 3-0 lead.
The Packers immediately responded with an eight-play, 56-yard touchdown drive. On 3rd-and-8 from the Carolina 12-yard line, Love fired a pass up the middle to Kraft for six.
However, rookie kicker Trey Smack hit the left upright with his PAT. He has now missed three PAT and five field goals (including ones from 26 and 35 yards last Sunday in a 20-17 road loss to the Detroit Lions).
In between the first and second quarters, the World Series champion Milwaukee Brewers appeared on the field with the Commissioner's Trophy. Outfielder Sal Frelick even did the Lambeau Leap.
However, Hubbard did a Lambeau leap of his own after he capped a 13-play, 65-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. The PAT made it 10-6.
On the Packers' next possession, Watson fumbled after Panthers safety Nick Scott punched the ball out and linebacker Bobby Okereke recovered.
Carolina went three-and-out in response, though, and then Green Bay went downfield for a go-ahead touchdown courtesy of Jacobs on 3rd-and-goal at the Panther one-yard line to cap a nine-play, 90-yard drive.
The big play on the drive was a Watson 53-yard catch despite defensive pass interference from rookie cornerback Will Lee. Watson made a diving catch on a moon ball and fell hard on the ground as Lee landed on top of him while in coverage.
Both were shaken up and went back to the locker room.
Watson suffered a chest injury and was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons, per sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung during the broadcast. Lee suffered a hamstring injury and did not return.
The Packers got the ball back quickly after linebacker Ty'Ron Hopper deflected Panthers quarterback Bryce Young's pass and caught it himself for the interception to set Green Bay up at the Carolina 43-yard line.
Shortly thereafter, Love hit Golden for a 24-yard touchdown on 3rd-and-13.
The game featured a massive momentum swing early in the third when the Panthers got stuffed on 4th-and-2 at midfield. Packers defensive tackle Chris McClellan got the stop on Hubbard.
Green Bay took advantage of the short field, and Jacobs scored his second touchdown after Love threw him a four-yard pass.
The Packers soon some great news, though, when Watson returned from the hospital after being cleared following tests.
Watson gave more insight into what happened postgame.
As for the game, the Panthers fought back. Ryan Fitzgerald hit a 50-yard field goal late in the third quarter to make it 27-13.
With 5:37 left in regulation and the Panthers facing 4th-and-3 from the Packer 26-yard line, Young hit wide receiver Jalen Coker, who ran in for a touchdown.
Carolina missed a two-point conversion, but a crucial defensive stop led to the Panthers getting the ball back on their own 37-yard line. However, the Green Bay defense showed up again and forced an incomplete pass on 4th-and-5 at midfield.
The Packers ran down the clock nearly all the way, but the Panthers got possession back with 22 seconds remaining and no timeouts. It was a Herculean task to score from there, and the Packers recovered a fumble as the Panthers tried a miracle series of laterals for a touchdown.
Both teams play next on Sunday, Nov. 8. The 5-3 Packers will visit the New England Patriots. The 3-4 Panthers will host the Denver Broncos.
