Myles Garrett's Outfit Caused NFL to Call Rams, New Rumors Surface on Warning and Potential Fine
Los Angeles Rams star Myles Garrett received a warning from the NFL regarding the outfit he wore on the sideline of Monday night's overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills, according to The Athletic's Jonathan Jones.
Los Angeles Rams star Myles Garrett received a warning from the NFL regarding the outfit he wore on the sideline of Monday night's overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills, according to The Athletic's Jonathan Jones .
Garrett, who was placed on injured reserve after undergoing knee surgery ahead of Week 2, wore a tracksuit not branded with the Rams logo or colors on the sideline of the Week 5 matchup.
Players are expected to wear team-issued gear on the sidelines, Jones noted. The Rams "heard from the league office about it," although Garrett did not receive a fine, according to Jones.
Jones described the warning as part of the NFL's "warn first, fine later" policy.
The news comes a week and a half after the NFL announced relaxed celebration rules and stated players will be warned first before receiving fines for "gray area" violations.
Jones noted the NFL might be "offering a small olive branch to players" after recently rescinding fines issues to multiple players, including for "gray area" celebrations from Ja'Marr Chase and Jameson Williams.
The NFL also walked back the league's previous policy to fine players who imitate drinking in on-field celebrations by rescinding fines to Kyle Juszcyzyk and Jake Ferguson.
The league rulebook states potential fines of $11,941 for a first offense of "unauthorized logo/branding or intellectual property," as well as a $5,971 penalty for "uniform violations."
Garrett's potential rule violation involved a Jumpman tracksuit, Jones noted. That follows Jordan Brand's January announcement Garrett has signed a new deal with the company after setting the NFL's single-season sacks record in his final season with the Cleveland Browns.
Garrett underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in mid-September. He has yet to return to practice this week as Rams (2-3) prepare for a Week 6 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals (1-4).
When asked Friday if the Rams intend to open Garrett's 21-day window to return by bringing him back to practice next week, head coach Sean McVay said he would provide an update Monday.
"There's benchmarks that you want to hit in the midst of this rehab and recovery. He's hitting all those... I'd love to have him back out there, but not at the expense of rushing him back," McVay said about Garrett.
It sounds like Garrett could be wearing blue and yellow on the sidelines until he is able to return.
