The New England Patriots reportedly won't be generating significant headlines by Tuesday's NFL trade deadline, and the previous acquisition of star receiver A.J. Brown has something to do with that strategy.

ESPN's Mike Reiss reported Sunday that "fireworks aren't expected with the Patriots" when it comes to major trades. Instead, they could look to make some "modest moves" like they were known for when Bill Belichick was the head coach, such as when they acquired linebacker Kyle Van Noy and a seventh-round pick for a sixth-round pick in 2016.

"There are multiple reasons, according to sources familiar with the team's thinking, and near the top of the list is the unwillingness to sacrifice significant assets from future Patriots teams," Reiss wrote. "The club already did that in the offseason by trading a 2028 first-round pick and 2027 fifth-rounder for receiver A.J. Brown in June, which was part of an overall aggressive offseason."

The Brown trade isn't the only reason there could be hesitance from the Patriots to make any high-profile acquisitions.

Reiss explained they leave for Munich on Wednesday ahead of their game in Germany against the Detroit Lions, which would limit the amount of time they could bring any acquired player in and have him ready to go for the next game.

What's more, they have just $5 million in salary cap space and will need some of it for elevating players from the practice squad and bringing others off injured reserve. They simply don't have significant space to add highly paid players at this point of the season.

New England could look at Brown as something of an acquisition for the stretch run, though, when he does return to the lineup.

He has appeared in just three games this season and will miss Sunday's contest against the Green Bay Packers because of ankle and knee injuries.

The offense has adjusted to his absence and relied on tight end Hunter Henry and running back Rhamondre Stevenson in the aerial attack. Wide receivers DeMario Douglas and Romeo Doubs have also been key factors.

Still, the Patriots brought Brown in to be their go-to receiver for quarterback Drake Maye. He surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in each of the previous four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, including when he went over 1,400 in back-to-back years in 2022 and 2023.

At his best, he is one of the league's elite receivers who opens up the entire field for the rest of his teammates because of the attention he draws.

While the Patriots reportedly won't be adding headline players at the deadline, adding that version of Brown would open up their offense for the stretch run.
