Joey Porter Jr.'s Steelers Future in Doubt as New NFL Rumors Reveal 'Fracture' amid Contract Talks

The 2026 season is the last on Joey Porter Jr.'s contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he reportedly may not step on the field again for the team.

"I don't know if he ever puts on a Steelers uniform again," a source told ESPN's Brooke Pryor and Jeremy Fowler amid the cornerback's contract negotiations with Pittsburgh.

Pryor and Fowler reported Thursday that "some close to the situation sensed a fracture in the relationship between Porter and the organization" after he was inactive for the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons.

In addition to the contract situation, Porter missed all of training camp because of a back injury and left Thursday's practice with a trainer. The Steelers listed him as a limited participant for Thursday's practice with the back injury after listing him as limited Wednesday for "not injury related—conditioning."

Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac said his model projects a four-year, $110 million extension for Porter, but the years and money reportedly aren't the only issue.

According to Pryor and Fowler, there is a "significant difference between the Steelers' view of Porter's value and how Porter values himself" with the "core issue" being the overall "structure of the contract."

Pittsburgh traditionally doesn't offer guarantees past the first season outside of notable exceptions such as T.J. Watt, while Porter is looking for "stronger guarantees" than draft mates Keeanu Benton, Darnell Washington and Nick Herbig.

With the guarantee gap looming, Pittsburgh and Porter reportedly haven't even seriously approached the per-year average part of the negotiations.

Not having him on the field is certainly a blow for the Steelers defense, as he has the ability to be a shutdown corner who makes life easier for the rest of his teammates. That he is just 26 years old suggests he will continue in that role for the foreseeable future.

However, it remains to be seen whether that future will be with the Steelers.
