The Travis Hunter two-way experiment had its biggest success to date in Sunday's game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans.
Hunter scored on a seven-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to bring Jacksonville to within three points, 31-28.
On Houston's next possession, the second-year star intercepted a pass from Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Before Hunter, nobody had notched a touchdown reception and interception in the same NFL game for 24 years:
The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner was limited to seven appearances as a rookie, and his usage as a two-way player was sporadic. To open the 2026 season, the Jags have lined him up almost exclusively on defense. He had logged 249 snaps on defense to just 21 on the other side of the ball, per Pro Football Reference .
In September, Jacksonville coach Liam Coen indicated he had plans to get Hunter more looks at receiver, but that yet to materialize prior to Week 6.
Maybe the coaching staff is finally making good on that. Hunter's 59 receiving yards against Houston were his third-most in a game, and he doubled his career touchdown reception output.
It's doubtful the 6'1" wide receiver/cornerback will match the kind of workload he had in college at Colorado. Playing 100-plus snaps every week in a 17-game season is unsustainable.
Hunter's game might at least be evolving to where he can be a shutdown corner and situational pass-catcher to great effect.
