Report: 'No change is imminent' from Saints owner Gayle Benson
Sounds like Gayle Benson is all talk. ESPN reports 'the indication is that no change is imminent' after the Saints owner criticized her coach and GM.
So much for Gayle Benson's strong words about the team she owns underperforming. Days after naming head coach Kellen Moore and general manager Mickey Loomis among those responsible for a 1-4 record through five games she called "not acceptable," Benson was seen politely hugging and chatting with Moore at New Orleans Saints practice on Friday. And this new report makes it sound like she's all talk and no action.
ESPN's Ian Rapoport wrote that "according to those who know: Benson supports Moore and the coaching staff, and the indication is that no change is imminent."
That's probably the worst thing you could read after this. The Saints have gotten worse by the week -- increasingly undisciplined, harder to watch, and slowing down offensively as the season marches on. The defense has fallen apart and the special teams units have been at fault on too many negative plays. Moore hasn't shown he has the answers to solve the problems he and Loomis have created, or to respond to the challenges out of their control. And they're just going to ride this out?
If your goal is to see the Saints punt on this season and lock up a top-three pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, you might be in luck. It's possible Rapoport's sources are wrong and a 1-6 or 2-5 record at the bye week would be enough to push Benson into action. But right now, based on what we can see and what's going around, it's tough to see the Saints giving fans much reason for optimism any time soon.
