The Philadelphia Eagles have faced plenty of questions over how they handled star quarterback Jalen Hurts' blood clot, which went undisclosed as he traveled to London, played against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and flew back home. The NFL appears ready to move on from the situation, but the players' union isn't.
On Tuesday night, the NFL Players Association released a statement calling for a "full investigation" into the medical care Hurts received. The union also revealed that the league had told it that it did not plan to review the situation.
Hurts sought treatment on his calf on Oct. 8 before the Eagles flew to London. He was listed with a calf injury on the injury report but was a full participant in practice.
On Oct. 10, a superficial blood clot was found in his left calf during a visit to the Cleveland Clinic in London. Hurts was cleared to play the next day and played the entire game in the Eagles' 19-17 loss to the Jaguars before flying home with the team that night.
A follow-up ultrasound on Oct. 14 revealed that the clot had moved, and Hurts was eventually placed on injured reserve. Then on Monday, the Eagles announced that his diagnosis had been updated to deep vein thrombosis "as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli," meaning there were now clots in both of his lungs.
The team said that Hurts' prognosis is "very good," but he's expected to miss the rest of the season while on blood thinners.
Despite the questions surrounding the situation, the NFL has concluded that the process that led to Hurts being cleared to play in London "was handled appropriately," according to The Athletic . The league will not punish the Eagles.
The NFL also released a statement on Tuesday, saying it had been in contact with the Eagles' medical staff and the Cleveland Clinic throughout the process.
While the NFL might be looking to move on from the situation, NFLPA isn't ready to do that just yet. In fact, the union is demanding a "full investigation" into the matter.
"The NFLPA is not aware of any NFL investigation into the medical care provided to Jalen Hurts," the union said in a statement, via Pro Football Talk . "In fact, the league previously informed the union that it did not plan to review the care he received."
"Before conclusions are drawn about how this situation was handled, there must be a full investigation into what occurred," the statement continued. "Determining the facts is essential to ensuring players receive the highest level of care and protection going forward."
We'll have to see whether or not the league does decide
