Tom Brady has named Brock Purdy among his MVP candidates after the San Francisco 49ers quarterback impressed during the first half of the NFL season.
Purdy has helped guide the 49ers to a 6-1 record through seven games, despite the team dealing with several injuries on the offensive side of the ball.
The 26-year-old has completed 69.2% of his passes for 1,748 yards, 15 touchdowns and four interceptions. He has also added 161 rushing yards and one touchdown on 32 carries.
Tom Brady backs Brock Purdy's MVP case after impressive San Francisco 49ers start
Brady shared his MVP candidates in his weekly power rankings for Fox Sports, although the NFL legend admitted he was reluctant to make an early prediction.
The former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback named four players who have caught his attention: Purdy, Josh Allen, Jared Goff and Jahmyr Gibbs.
"There's nothing I like less than trying to figure out who's the MVP not even halfway through the season," Brady said.
However, he was particularly impressed by what Purdy has done in San Francisco, highlighting how important the quarterback has been to their winning record.
"Brock Purdy, the 6-1 Niners, I don't think they would be in that position without Brock's steady dependable consistent play. He's done so many great things," Brady added.
Purdy was selected with the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, earning the label of 'Mr. Irrelevant'. His performances since entering the league have made that tag look increasingly misplaced.
49ers general manager John Lynch has also praised the quarterback's development, particularly his ability to extend plays and make improvements to his game.
"He's extremely talented," Lynch said. "You see him, the way he goes and extends plays. He's done it in each and every game, aside from being able to stay in the pocket and progress."
Lynch also suggested Purdy had taken criticism about his throwing ability personally, pointing to the improvements he has made in driving the ball downfield.
With Brady now including him in the MVP conversation, Purdy has another endorsement to add to his growing reputation. Maintaining his current production will be important as San Francisco looks to protect its strong start.
