Former NFL defensive end Allen Bailey, who played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons, has died at the age of 37.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who coached Bailey from 2013 to 2018, confirmed the news during his press conference on Wednesday.
"Sad news, the passing of Allen Bailey. Our hearts go out to his family. Prayers are with them. Way too young, obviously," Reid said. "One of my favorite players. Great kid, and just sorry to see that happen to him."
Alford Bailey Jr., Allen's brother, told TMZ Sports Allen's body was discovered in his Florida home on Tuesday. The cause of death has not yet been announced.
Bailey was a third-round pick by the Chiefs in the 2011 NFL draft. He played four years in college at the University of Miami from 2007 to 2010 and was named to the All-ACC team in his final two seasons.
The Georgia native appeared in all 16 games with Kansas City as a rookie. He spent the first eight years of his NFL career with the Chiefs. His best season came in 2018 when he recorded six sacks to help the team reach the AFC Championship Game.
Following the 2018 campaign, Bailey signed a two-year contract with the Falcons in free agency. He appeared in 31 games with Atlanta before being released by the club in February 2021.
