Dillon Gabriel will back up Shedeur Sanders at quarterback for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler .

The Browns listed Deshaun Watson as questionable in their injury report as he recovered from a concussion. He missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday and was limited for Friday's workout.

Watson has reportedly cleared the NFL's concussion protocol, but Cleveland isn't taking any risks with the three-time Pro Bowler.

The Browns' overall performance made it tough for coach Todd Monken to change quarterbacks despite Watson being inconsistent. The veteran signal-caller has thrown for 1,806 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions, and he ranks 28th among qualified passers in QBR (40.9), per ESPN.com .

The 31-year-old briefly exited Cleveland's 27-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team said he was evaluated for a concussion on the sideline and cleared. He was assessed following the contest and then again Monday. It wasn't until Tuesday he began to experience concussion-like symptoms.

Monken confirmed Friday that Sanders will get the nod against New Orleans. After that, moving Gabriel up one spot in the depth chart felt like the obvious solution to the backup situation.

The southpaw hasn't seen the field since last December. As a rookie, he had 937 yards, seven touchdowns and two picks in 10 appearances.

If everything goes according to plan for the Browns, Gabriel's wait for meaningful snaps will extend for at least another week.
