Adam Vinatieri sets Guinness World Record for highest field goal at over 11,000 feet above sea level

Adam Vinatieri isn't a stranger to kicking in snowy conditions. But in the Swiss Alps? That was a first for the Hall of Fame kicker this week as he set a Guinness World Record .

On Tuesday, the 53-year-old Vinatieri set the record for kicking the highest field goal in the world at 11,332 feet above sea level at Jungfraujoch, also known as the "Top of Europe."

The conditions were a little more difficult than what he experienced at Foxboro Stadium during the 2001 AFC Divisional Playoff Game against the Oakland Raiders when he kicked a 45-yard field goal to send the New England Patriots to the AFC Championship Game.

"Snow is simply part of my time with the Patriots," Vinatieri said in a team release. "But kicking a field goal at 3,454 meters is something completely different from anything I've ever seen in the NFL. You feel the altitude with every breath you take, your heart rate is different, your rhythm is different, and no one can really tell you beforehand how it will affect the kick, because no one has done this before. The fact that we were able to set the record under these conditions makes me very proud. This is definitely one of the most special field goals I've ever made."

The record attempt was part of the Patriots' promotion for their Nov. 15 game in Munich, Germany, against the Detroit Lions . The team holds market rights in the DACH region of Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Vinatieri played 24 NFL seasons with the Patriots and Indianapolis Colts . He is the NFL's all-time leading scorer (2,673 points) and is the league record holder for field goals made (599), playoff points (238) and successful overtime field goals (12).

A three-time First-team All-Pro, Vinatieri won three Super Bowls with the Patriots and one more with the Colts. In Super Bowls XXXVI and XXXVIII, it was his foot that kicked the Patriots to championships in the final seconds. His on-field success led to him be part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2026 .
