The No. 1 Miami Hurricanes were ranked the top destination for transfer-portal quarterbacks, according to On3, and it should be a no-brainer at this point.

Coral Gables has been home to three high-caliber passers, two of whom capitalized on the opportunity, and one is currently carving out a similar path.

It started ahead of the 2024 season and head coach Mario Cristobal needed a proven quarterback. He landed Cam Ward from Washington State and it became the start of a recent trend. The Heisman Trophy finalist completed 305 of 454 passes (67.2 percent) while throwing for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns.

Ward received consensus All-American honors and became the No. 1 pick, selected by the Tennessee Titans, in the 2025 NFL Draft. After he departed, Carson Beck joined the Coral Gables program.

It was a unique situation, as the Jacksonville (Fla.) native had spent the previous five seasons at Georgia. In the 2024 Southeastern Conference championship game, Beck suffered a right elbow injury, which ended up being a UCL tear. He initially declared for the NFL Draft, same class as Ward, but decided to change course.

Given the injury, Beck's future in football was uncertain. He took advantage of the opportunity to return to college football and reinvent himself. Rather than going back to familiar territory in Athens (GA), Beck returned to the Sunshine State.

There were concerns about whether the sixth-year veteran could propel the Hurricanes back to former glory. He led them to a 5-0 start to the 2025 season, but two losses against Louisville and SMU put all hopes in jeopardy. As Beck's arm returned to full strength, it led the Hurricanes to a dominant four-game win streak to close the regular season, which was enough to make the College Football Playoffs through an at-large bid.

After beating Texas A&M, Ohio State (former reigning champions), and Ole Miss, "The U" had returned to the National Championship for the first time since 2003. Despite falling short against Indiana, Beck's football future found new life, and was taken in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, selected by the Arizona Cardinals.

In search of another transfer-portal quarterback, the Hurricanes fell short of a few candidates, including Sam Leavitt, Brendan Sorsby, and Ty Simpson. Right before the window closed, Darian Mensah answered the call. The previous Atlantic Coast Conference leader in passing yards (3,973 yards) and touchdowns (34) kept the Hurricanes' National Championship hopes alive, currently 7-0 (ACC 5-0) this season and leading the Football Bowl Subdivision with an 81.4 completion percentage.

Mensah will likely be another one-and-done situation, like Ward and Beck, despite having extra NCAA eligibility remaining. If he remains projected as a high first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, the chances of him staying in Coral Gables are slim. Although the Hurricanes will look to give the young quarterback core, such as Luke Nickel and Dereon Coleman, a chance to lead the offense, it doesn't guarantee that a proven transfer won't step foot on campus.

Given the proven track record, it's difficult for potential candidate to ignore. The spring portal window starts on Jan. 4, 2027 to Jan. 13.
