Mike Tomlin shows off incredibly detailed Minecraft city he built when he was coaching Steelers
Mike Tomlin put a lot of thought into lighting and interior design... really.
For all his success, former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin received his fair share of criticism during his 19-year run in the position. But one thing he could never be condemned for was his attention to detail, a trait that apparently extends far beyond his football life.
Turns out, while Tomlin was leading the Steelers to winning records he was also building an elaborately detailed city in the video game Minecraft. Tomlin revealed that tidbit during a September interview on the "Today Show," saying he spent 12 years planning and building the city.
It seemed too outlandish to be true. Was a future Hall of Fame coach spending his down time painstakingly building a city in a video game popular with a much younger generation?
Well, Tomlin gave fans that answer Wednesday night with a tour of his elaborate city. It was … pretty incredible.
Prior to showing off his city, Tomlin revealed that he started playing Minecraft as a way to connect with his kids. Even though his kids have left the game behind, Tomlin has continued to add to his city. During his interview with the "Today Show," Tomlin said his kids — who are grown now — encourage him to show off the city every time they visit.
And if the above clip is any indication, they had many, many reasons to encourage their dad to make his interest public. Tomlin clearly put a lot of thought and care into the project, explaining that he wanted to build the city around a large body of water.
From there, he kept making additions … like, lots of them. Tomlin showed off therapy rooms, public restrooms, a baseball stadium and glass elevators, among many, many other details . Tomlin also gave his thoughts on interior decorating, lighting fixtures and bedroom furniture in his video. No, really.
Tomlin's full video — which he posted on his YouTube page — came in under 20 minutes, which was nowhere near enough time for him to show off his entire city. Fans hoping to see more are in luck, though. Tomlin teased future episodes in which he planned to show off other aspects of his city.
Now that he's no longer coaching, Tomlin presumably has even more time to keep adding to his Minecraft city. While many assumed Tomlin's time away from the NFL would be short-lived, Wednesday's unveiling may have paved the way for Tomlin to turn in a lucrative second act as one of the biggest Minecraft streamers around. That sounds a lot less stressful than taking on another head-coaching job in the NFL, especially for someone already as accomplished as Tomlin.
