Puka Nacua 'not making great progress,' according to Rams coach Sean McVay

Nacua missed Week 2 with groin soreness and could miss Sunday night's matchup against the Broncos.

The Los Angeles Rams are likely to be without wide receiver Puka Nacua for a second straight week, judging by head coach Sean McVay's comments on Wednesday.

"We'll see," McVay told ESPN Los Angeles . "He's not making great progress. But we'll welcome Puka back with open arms, but if not I've got a ton of confidence in the group that we will go with if he doesn't go."

Nacua missed the Rams' Monday night win over the New York Giants with what was listed as a hip injury, but McVay said the wideout had "a little bit of soreness" in his groin.

Earlier in the day, McVay said he wasn't sure if Nacua would play Sunday night against the Denver Broncos, adding that the injury is not a long-term concern for the team and they are just being cautious.

"When you're a skill player and you're really trying to hit high-speed yards and really open up and you feel just ... it's like some of the things that can almost be like pre-hernia is kind of what he's feeling," McVay said . "And so you err on the side of caution. Usually time is the best thing that allows that thing to heal. And then once you get to a certain point, then I think you feel pretty good moving forward."

What Nacua is dealing with now is not related to the psoas issue that caused him to miss time during training camp. He was healthy enough to play Week 1 during the Rams' loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Australia. Nacua caught five passes on nine targets for 74 yards.

The Rams held a walk-through on Wednesday, but the expectation was that Nacua would not have practiced.

"We all want him to be able to be out there, but we want him to be able to return to performance, not just be able to just kind of gut through it," McVay said.
