New Patriots Rumors on 'Frustrated' Christian Gonzalez as Both 'Sides Divided' 2 Days Before Opener

Contracts talks between the New England Patriots and cornerback Christian Gonzalez seemingly haven't progressed in a positive manner.

According to Albert Breer of SI.com, "The Patriots are at a real contract impasse with star cornerback Gonzalez, with a bumpy negotiation leaving the sides divided two days from kickoff. It has left the player frustrated, in that this doesn't typically happen for a premium player at a premium position."

The 24-year-old Gonzalez was a Pro Bowler for the first time in 2025, registering 69 tackles (one for loss) and 10 passes defensed in 14 games. In his three-year career he's registered just three interceptions, though he's defended 21 passes in the past two seasons alone.

Pro Football Focus ranked him as the No. 95 player in football last season, noting that "after a slow start, Gonzalez finished the season strong, highlighted by an 86.8 PFF coverage grade in the Super Bowl. Overall, Gonzalez ranked 11th among 109 qualifying cornerbacks in PFF coverage grade (76.9) in 2025. He allowed a passer rating of just 57.0 when targeted, which ranked fourth at the position."

Gonzalez is under contract through the 2028 season but is seeking a lucrative extension, likely one that will rival the four-year, $132 million deal that Devon Witherspoon signed with the Seattle Seahawks in mid-August, which reset the cornerback market.

As for whether those talks are progressing, Gonzalez told reporters , "I don't know," on Saturday.

"I'm focused on today," he added, declining to comment on whether he would play the team's season-opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday. "Right now, it is practice in what, a couple, 30 minutes, 40 minutes. Worried on that right now, so we'll focus on that."

Head coach Mike Vrabel, meanwhile, also commented on the matter.

"I don't get involved in the negotiations per se, but I certainly want to be involved in trying to get the get the situation resolved," he told reporters. "I'm not trading the offers with the agent. That's probably, I would imagine pretty standard, but I don't know. I mean I think that's just the way I've tried to do it."

For now, it sounds as though the two sides remain fairly far apart, a concern heading into the 2026 season.
