Zach Ertz Discusses Family's Emotional Reaction to Eagles Contract in Video After Reunion

Veteran tight end Zach Ertz provided some insight Tuesday into his family's response to learning he had signed on to be part of the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad.

Speaking to reporters after arriving in Philly, Ertz said his mom was "in tears," his wife was "excited," and his kids "really don't understand," although he was already teaching them to do the Eagles chant.

The 35-year-old Ertz spent parts of his first nine NFL seasons with the Eagles from 2013 to 2021.

A second-round pick out of Stanford in the 2013 NFL draft, Ertz was a three-time Pro Bowler during his time with the Eagles, and he ranks second in team history in receptions (579), fifth in receiving yardage (6,267) and seventh in receiving touchdowns (38).

Tight end became a significant need for the Eagles on Sunday when starter Dallas Goedert suffered a sprained MCL during Philly's win over the Tennessee Titans.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport (h/t ESPN's Tim McManus ), Goedert is expected to miss "a few weeks" as a result of the injury.

The only other tight end on the Eagles' roster this season with a catch is Johnny Mundt, who has caught two passes for eight yards and is primarily a blocker.

With a pair of tight ends already on injured reserve as well in Eli Stowers and Grant Calcaterra, it won't be too surprising if Ertz is immediately elevated from the practice squad and playing on Monday night against the Chicago Bears.

Despite his status as a 14th-year NFL veteran, Ertz has remained productive in recent years.

With the Washington Commanders, he registered 66 receptions for 654 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024, and 50 grabs for 504 yards and four touchdowns last season.

That level of production would be more than adequate to replace Goedert temporarily, and quarterback Jalen Hurts would then potentially have a quality tight end duo at his disposal once Goedert is healthy.
