Peyton Manning is one of the greatest players, if not the greatest, to ever play for the Indianapolis Colts . The former quarterback is one of the most decorated players in American football history. He has won the Super Bowl two times, and is a five-time NFL Most Valuable Player.

The Colts have not found the same success since Manning's departure. He has now taken an important decision regarding his former team.

Peyton Manning not expected to take Colts GM role

The Colts recently fired general manager Chris Ballard after more than nine seasons. While in charge at the franchise, the team had a 72-82-1 record, made two playoff appearances, and started 14 different quarterbacks after Andrew Luck's retirement. Owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon has said the franchise will conduct a thorough search for the next general manager. One of the names initially linked to the search was none other than Manning.

However, according to league sources cited by ESPN's Adam Schefter , the legendary quarterback is not expected to emerge as a candidate for the Colts' vacant general manager position. The franchise have not contacted Manning about the role, and the Hall of Fame quarterback is not anticipated to pursue it.

Manning has not prepared for or expressed interest in becoming an NFL general manager. His post-playing career includes running Omaha Productions, co-hosting the ManningCast on ESPN's Monday Night Football package, and handling commercial commitments. He also has two children in high school, further limiting time for a position that demands full-time, day-to-day operational focus. Sources indicated the timing is unsuitable given these existing responsibilities.

The same sources also said that Manning remains open to considering NFL opportunities in the future, but only for those that involve higher-profile executive or ownership-adjacent roles similar to those held by other former players. Some examples include Tom Brady's role as minority owner and adviser with the Las Vegas Raiders, Matt Ryan as president of football for the Atlanta Falcons, and Tony Boselli as executive vice president of football operations for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Manning has previously talked about leading an NFL team from the front office.

Peyton Manning once spoke about running football team

Manning previously shared his thoughts on running a football team in the future. In an interview with the Denver Post , he said, "I don't think that's anywhere on my radar by any means. I love being an ambassador for the Broncos and for the Colts, for the University of Tennessee. Obviously, living here I get to go to all the Broncos games. I was out at the facility the other day. Our kids do sports in the area around Dove Valley, so I'm probably at the facility a couple times a week."

He added, "I'm excited about still being a part of the team and being part of the community. . . . I still feel an attachment and have really enjoyed getting to know the Walton-Penner family as well. But as far as running a team, I don't think that's on my radar."

While Peyton Manning will not be interested in the role, the Colts will have to select a suitable GM for their future.
