DURHAM, N.C.(WFXR) -- Ferrum College rallied from a 19-7 second-quarter deficit to take a late fourth-quarter lead, but Shaw University forced overtime and edged the Panthers, 34-28, Saturday afternoon in non-conference football action at Durham County Memorial Stadium.
Ferrum took a 28-25 lead with 1:10 remaining when
on a 17-yard touchdown pass. Shaw answered with a 33-yard field goal as time expired to force overtime, then scored on a 3-yard touchdown run by Alexander Marsh to claim the win.
THE BASICS Shaw jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the opening quarter on a 58-yard touchdown run by Fabian Diggs and a 5-yard touchdown pass from Alexander Marsh to Antrel Gibson.
Ferrum answered early in the second quarter when Foutz scored on a 1-yard touchdown run, capping a 10-play, 47-yard drive. Shaw responded with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Marsh to Reggie King Jr., but Ferrum closed the half with another scoring drive, as Foutz found Gray for a 30-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 19-14 at the break.
The Panthers took their first lead of the afternoon early in the third quarter when Foutz scored on another 1-yard touchdown run, putting Ferrum ahead 21-19. Shaw regained the lead two minutes later on Marsh's 22-yard touchdown pass to Rashid Jones.
Ferrum's defense kept the Panthers within striking distance, and Ferrum rallied again in the fourth quarter. Foutz and Gray connected for their second touchdown of the game, this time on a 17-yard scoring pass that capped a nine-play, 81-yard drive and put the Panthers ahead 28-25 with 1:10 remaining.
Shaw then drove 58 yards in the final 1:10 and tied the game on Benjamin Turner's 33-yard field goal as time expired. Ferrum had the ball first in overtime, buit failed to score. Shaw took possession first and finished a six-play, 25-yard drive with Marsh's three-yard touchdown run to secure the victory.
KEY STATS Ferrum: Foutz completed 14 of 27 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 26 yards and two touchdowns;
rushed 20 times for 135 yards; Gray caught eight passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns and added 63 punt-return yards and 66 kickoff-return yards for 240 all-purpose yards;
had two receptions for 17 yards. Defensively
led the Panthers with eight tackles, including two tackles for loss.
Shaw: Marsh completed 18 of 29 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 17 yards and a touchdown; Diggs rushed 19 times for 178 yards and a touchdown; King Jr. caught three passes for 103 yards and a touchdown; and Jones had two receptions for 38 yards and a touchdown.
